Note Story of Contong Square Surabaya:
When we walk from Tugu Pahlawan towards Siola, then we will be along Jalan Pahlawan, then after the governor's office building the road will split into two, namely Jalan Pahlawan and Jalan Hang Kramat, the Contong Square located not far from this way. And now, this location known as Baliwerti, somehow the term "Contong Square" suddenly not used much.
This picture was taken by a photographer facing the direction of Jalan Pahlawan (north).
We can see in this photo is a base region of gig with a white monument standing in the middle of Contong Square, now after seeing the shape we can assume why this Square called Contong (cone).
white monument was built to remember a German who contributed to the Dutch government.
on its website http://djawatempodoeloe.multiply.com, Priambodo Prayitno a.k.a Olivier John wrote:
In 1889 this square is named Von Bultzingslöwenplein. The name is taken from the name of Günther von Bultzingslöwen (1839-1889), a former German consul in Surabaya who contributed to the Red Cross in Aceh War I (1873-1874). Monument in the middle of the square was built to commemorate the services of Von Bultzingslöwen
This monument is now gone, information via chat with Olivier Johanes, author of "djawa tempoe doeloe", this monument still standing in 1960.
